Salvaging Coins

Lately, our 4 year-old Electrolux washing machine has not been as effective in removing dirt and grime from our clothes as before. So I took to checking the drain pump (that little squarish door at the bottom of the washing machine) for any items trapped there. Not that I know whether that was the right thing to do.

To my surprise, I discovered two $1 dollar coins embedded in some black mouldy mess down there. They were so encrusted with dirt that no matter how hard I rubbed them nothing came off. I doubt they would be accepted for any cash payment. It was a waste to throw them away. So I experimented with vinegar…

All I did after soaking these coins in vinegar for a few hours was to rub the dirt and rinse. Not bad eh. :)

I remember a story about the Singapore $1 coin told by a Chinese tour guide during my Beijing tour with my mom a few years back. As the story goes, it was rumoured that our MM Lee had included some feng shui elements in the coin. Can you see the octagon at the circumference of the coin? It resembles the Chinese ba gua. According to the story, there was some bad omen arising in Singapore and in order to ward off the evil, any person taking out the shiny $1 coin will sort off reflect the bad luck like the ba gua. Ha ha, I thought the solution was ingenious. Anyway, you could read more about the story here and here.
