Fukuoka-Matsue-Osaka: Day 09 @ Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo

Our third stop at our day long excursion of the local places of interest in Shimane prefecture. This is a small museum that was built in 2007 and showcasing artefacts related to the history of the prefecture. Of particular interest is the model of the main building of the Izumo Taisha Shrine, since the main shrine itself is not normally accessible to the public. We actually didn’t get to stay in this museum for long – just 25 minutes as we’d spent more time at Izumo Taisha Shrine than the initial planned itinerary had allocated. The museum isn’t big, but the collection of items, including crafting and farming items, ceremonial weapons, is fascinating. You could probably spend an hour viewing the exhibits here.

Our fourth and last stop on this day excursion was Shimane Winery, which comes from locally grown grapes. I’m teetotaller, so the place didn’t really interest me much.

In all, this was a good and relaxed excrursion for me, with the highlight being the Adachi Museum. This museum almost makes a trip to Matsue worth the trouble, since it’s basically well out of the way for most international tourists: almost being the operative word. Unfortunately, unless you have business in this area or you’re passing through, Matsue doesn’t strike me as a place where there’s a lot to do.

We’re headed to Osaka for the last five days of this work trip. More notes to come soon then!
