5 Days in Shanghai – Shanghai Municipal History Museum

The more famous museum in Shanghai seems to be the Shanghai Museum, located in the Huangpu District (I visited that in the 2012 China trip, and it was again included in our itinerary though I won’t be posting about this repeated visit). What left me with a strong impression though was the Shanghai Municipal History Museum – hidden and tucked away at the basement of Oriental Pearl Tower. The museum focuses on the colonial period of the city’s history – between 1860 and 1949. Aside from the life-sized vehicles, including rickshaws and vintage cars, the museum also houses a large number of models – some miniature, many life-sized wax models – of everyday life in Shanghai across the different eras. The displays are very well done-up, and visitors could spend more than an hour exploring each exhibit.

Regrettably, I didn’t take pictures of the displays’ notes, so can’t issue much commentary on each exhibit. Here’s a series of photos from some of the displays – all of which are life-sized wax figures, excepting the last two photos which are model dioramas of a traditional tea house.

Next post on the Chenghuang Temple Bazaar!
