Aircraft Photography @ Hong Kong International Airport

My trip to Hong Kong wasn’t one that was heavy on photography. Still, I had to decide which of my two camera systems to bring as I had colleagues presenting their conference papers and I’d promised to take pictures. The m4/3s got the pick this time; I figured I could use the further reach of the Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 and appreciated the lighter weight of the setup too.

The bonus of the Olympus E-M1 + 40-150mm f2.8 setup too was the opportunity it provided to take pictures of approaching then landing aircraft at Hong Kong International Airport. The very long terminal offered various vantage points for photography, and there was great sunny weather. On the other hand, the glass panels weren’t very clean, which meant that some of the pictures aren’t as crisp as they could had been, and there were plenty of obstructions, vehicles and other aircraft – let alone distance – from the terminal’s viewing gallery to the runaway. This is also one terrifically busy airport. At several points, planes were landing by the minute: it was easy to spot a landing aircraft and another just behind it!

A small selection of the about 300 pictures taken over an hour:

  1. Nice photos, bud! But hey, did you vertically flip the last one? I’ve heard stories about how scary some of those flights could be way back in the day.
