Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 – Center Sharpness

Post that’s only for Matt and the student-stalker.=)

Here’s a bunch of haphazardly-taken pictures during lunch time of construction work from some distance away. Source image as follows:

The below are 100% crops, with the vehicle’s plate number as my focusing point. All handheld, optical stabilizer ON, and shot at 200mm and at ISO1600, excepting the first shot that was at ISO900 (forgot to fix the ISO – whoops!). Here we go:

ISO900, 1/8000s, f2.8. Yep – quite soft right in the center when shot wide-open.
2012-photography-test-f4.0_cr1
ISO1600, 1/8000s, f4.0. Much better than f2.8. The full image resized for web purposes looks pretty alright too, though it might benefit from a slight bit of sharpening in post-processing.
2012-photography-test-f5.6_cr1
ISO1600, 1/4000s, f5.6. From here on, the full image looks acceptable for web use as it is without post-processing.
2012-photography-test-f7.1_cr1
ISO1600, 1/2500s, f7.1. Slightly sharper still!”
2012-photography-test-f9_cr1
ISO1600, 1/1600s, f9. Not much difference now for center sharpness between f7.1 to f9.

  1. Solid! No doubt, though, your primary use of this lens will be for outdoor family outings.

What is your impression of the lens weight, or, rather, your impression of how well you’ll be able to handle it? : )

  2. Yeah. The lens can be used at home, but given the f2.8 stop, I figured it should be used in reasonably good light nonetheless.

One thing I discovered about the 35mm too; it’s sharp, but it also means that I need to go real close to Hannah, sometimes to the point that she gets real interested in the camera and starts reaching out for it.=)

The weight’s manageable and you can tell you’re not handling a toy, but I worry for the new leather hand grip! It’s still solidly secure, but you can see it straining.=)

  3. Haha! I hadn’t even thought of the new leather hand grip! Surely it can withstand the additional weight.

As if you couldn’t predict already, I’m looking through some fast full-frame tele options to go with the D800e I pre-ordered just a bit ago.

I agree with Ling: You’re a bad influence on me! :)

  4. Wow the D800E? You’re gonna do hardcore landscape photography now eh.=)

  5. I think the resulting landscape photography with the D800e will be decidedly soft unless I spend a bomb to upgrade my lenses! I intend to start off with the 16-35mm f/4 VR and hope that will suffice for a while.

Oh yeah, and a nice f/2.8 tele. :)

I should have my new rig by the time I next visit, though at this rate I’ll probably arrive boxed by boat.
