Re-entering the Kitchen: Shrimp Dumplings (Shui Jiao)

It was Youth Day holiday here but Yang still had go to work. As I had the whole day to myself (with Hannah badgering me every now and then), I decided to pamper darling with home-made shrimp dumplings for dinner. *score brownie point* Hee hee :)

Recipe is taken from Food 4 Tots (again!) as I have been getting very satisfying results from using recipes shared on this particular blog. This recipe took me around 2.5 hours from preparation of ingredients all the way to serving the dish. The preparation of filling took the most time.

The filling for shrimp dumplings - to marinate for an hour in the fridge.

The three of us had this dish for dinner. It was very tasty all round. :)

  1. Hi Ling, is it ok for babies to eat seafood already? I thought they had to wait til 3years… Also, when did Hannah start eating eggs?

  2. Hi Lisa,

It depends on the type of seafood. Fish is usually the first seafood introduced when introducing meat. About prawns, there are mixed opinions but some introduced it as early as 8 months. As I have prawn allergy, I wanted to play it safe and waited until Hannah turned 2 years before introducing it to her. Best check with her PD if you want to be sure. Thank God, so far so good! I’d wait until she is way much older before I let her try shellfish.

The recommendation for safe introduction of whole eggs is 12 months and above. Below 12 months, introduce egg yolks. I have an ex-colleague who gave his daughter whole eggs below 12 months as he didn’t know. The baby was ok. :) Not everyone is allergic to egg whites lah.

  3. Oh my goodness! How do u find 2.5 hrs of time (n energy?!) to cook up such a dish! I’d be happy enough to have 5 mins to just nibble on a snack w/o the little one yelling “mama-sit on floor/chair/mat!!!” (n play with me!!)

  4. Hi LisaC,

First, motivation. Second, re-invent play and negotiate with her.

For the 2nd and more challenging part, I’d invite Hannah into the kitchen and let her help in mixing the ingredients and hold the vegetables (and she would disappear with them!). Sometimes she would badger me to wash this and that toy at the kitchen sink. The best part was that she would sit by herself with her bowls and utensils and pretend she was cooking as well :D

  5. I don’t know how u do it superwoman! :) if I allow her to participate, she’d make a big mess like stick her fingers into the mixture. And she cannot seem to sit n play on her own. Even with an array of pots, pans n knick-knacks displayed before her in the kitchen she would still demand my constant active participation (eg. she wants to feed me e stuff she cooked etc). N she cooks real quick coz she would move off to her other toys within 10 mins and it’s “mama-sit!!!!” all over again.

Motivation is low as well when she rarely takes to new creations. :(
Oh well I think I’ll just content myself with looking at the yummylicious food u make :)

  6. Hi LisaC,

Just like the Nike slogan lah – that’s how I did it. Initially, Hannah did whine and throw tantrum whenever I told her that mommy was going to cook. But over time, she gained some independence in playing by herself. Come to think of it now, perhaps the 2.5 hr preparation included the time spent coaxing her and appeasing her demands. Hee hee :)
