Reaching another milestone

I have an overdue confession to make.

There was one area of Hannah’s psychomotor skills which I deliberately delayed due to laziness on my part. Mommy wanted to avoid cleaning up messy food spills. So our dear girl didn’t get enough opportunities to try out feeding herself with a spoon. I tried to make up by giving her a set of fork, spoon and bowl during playtime. She has been pretending to feed herself with these crockery.

But today, today is different. I relented. I scooped out a small portion of her usual porridge meal into a small bowl, placed it before her and put a spoon in it. And boy, she was all happiness. Immediately, she reached out for the spoon and started to load up.

For the past week, Hannah has been showing signs of wanting to self-feed. I’m glad that the silicon bib which I bought many months ago came in handy as it could catch most of the spillage.

Here’s a video capturing Hannah’s first moments of independent feeding. :)

  1. heehee… so cute! Hannah eats really fast like a machine! I think it’ll be a long time before our little one of 17mths can feed herself porridge. Not that she can’t but yeah her mama’s just lazy, Well she refuses to let us put a bib ard her neck. She simply yanks anything from bibs, to hats, to pacifier clips off. I cannot fathom the potential mess. The only time we let her self-feed with a spoon and fork is breakfast where there’s no chance of soupy mess.

Not that she likes porridge anymore. Frm abt 15 mths she started rejecting porridge and wanted to eat rice only. It was like she didn’t like the texture and the fact that all her food was mixed up into one dish. She needed like rice, soup, n a separate dish of meat and veg. Which made cooking for her really troublesome. Nowadays the only way to get her to eat her porridge was if she was given a big bowl of Bak Hu (pork floss) to go with it!! Then she’ll keep sticking her neck out for more while chanting “Ba-Ba!! Ba-Ba!!”

All in all i think our little one is extremely naughty by comparison. I wonder if it’s coz she’s got two “whirlpools” on her head of hair?!

  2. btw what sort of spoon is hannah using? It looks very user-friendly. Am looking for new spoons for our girl as her rubber tipped ones are badly scratched by her constant biting and some plastic ones we bought are either too big or too shallow. Would appreciate ur recommendation tks!

  3. Hi LisaC,

Thanks for visiting our blog site :)

Wow, your girl is starting to have adult dishes! Great job there :) I think she’s starting to show her preference like an individual. Mine will come soon :)

The spoon you saw in the video comes in a set. It is Combi brand. Very useful. The set comes in a little travel plastic case containing an orange spoon and yellow fork. Do note that the spoon is for right-handed kids. I bought it from Kiddy Palace. I think there are also other brands which carry the type of spoon you were referring. Just can’t recall at the moment now. :) I like the fork especially as it is not sharp at all and I could bring it out for her to use it for feeding herself pancakes, scrambled eggs, etc for breakfast.:)
