Personal Hygiene for Hannah

One of the things which I’m so not looking forward to is keeping Hannah clean as she becomes more active and assertive. So far, changing diaper is becoming a nightmare as she would turn sideways and try to get up from the lying down position. Sigh, we might have to switch to pull-up pants…who knows.

On the bright side, Hannah is still willing to open her mouth to let me clean her gum, tongue and one tooth with a wash cloth. I have this white, squarish wash cloth which I soaked in very hot, soapy water to disinfect (not 100% though you know) overnight and then I would rinse well with tap water and then soak in just very hot water twice more. I deliberately chose white for the wash cloth so that any dirt or stained patches left on it could be seen clearly and I’d have a peace of mind to use it on Hannah if I don’t see these stuff. Recently, I saw an advertisement on a brand of tooth tissue developed by 2 dentists for their kids. I bought it to give it a shot hoping to do away with the troublesome wash cloth method. To my disappointment, it has a funny smell and Hannah didn’t like it at all. Back to square one.

Finally, her nails. When Hannah was younger, I could trim her nails while she was sleeping. But as she grows older, she tosses and turns a lot and it becomes rather awkward for me to try to trim her nails. Besides, her sleep could be interrupted by my movements. I tried to cut her nails while she was awake but she always use her free hand to grab her nail cutter. Dangerous business! Distractions, I need distractions. I noticed that Yang had a way of keeping Hannah still by showing her video clips taken of herself. I tried it and it worked perfectly! I would sit her on my laps in front of my PC monitor and play those video clips. Then I would whip out the nail cutter and snip away. I even have the luxury of filing her nails.  :)

Okies, so much for sharing something mundane. Hee hee :)

  1. Hello!
May I know what hannah is eating for breakfast these days? Am wondering how to plan a varied breakfast meal so that my bb of 10 mths wouldn’t get sick of eating the same stuff each day but yet simple to prepare… any tips to share? So far I have been giving her baby oat cereal mixed with different fruit purees like apple, pear, peach, banana but find that it’s getting quite mundane. So started giving her a smaller cereal portion each day followed by yoghurt, or bread n cheese spread, or fried egg. She eats the second course up readily but whines with the first course of fruit + cereal!
I have another qns: what level teat is hannah on? My bb has been on Dr Brown level 2 since she was 4+ mths old but recently she’s been choking on her milk feed especially if it’s fed before her nap/bed. :(

  2. sounds like a lot of work brushing hannah’s tooth! I’m quite la sap (dirty) by comparison: I just use the non-sterile guaze swabs from guardian, cut up each swab into four pcs to save $, and use 1 pc each time dipped in boiled water to wash her gums n tongue. :S
My girl refused to lie down at all for diaper change when she turned 7+ mths old and cleaning up after she pooed was a NIGHTMARE!!! We had to do it with her standing up and needed 2 people to complete the act! Luckily as got older she was more cooperative n we also discovered that she was ok with lying still so long as we didn’t change her diaper in her usual diaper-changing place, her cot – ie as long as it was on some other bed she woundn’t mind! ;0

  3. Hi hi kym :)

Hannah’s breakfast is quite boring too! I didn’t really bother much for her breakfast because I have variety for her lunch and dinner :) So far, she has been eating well. Like yours, it is usually cereal + a fruit / raisins or scrambled egg. Maybe I didn’t think much for her breakfast for a while because I started her on solids with lunch first, then dinner, then breakfast…come to think of it…a bit strange hor.

Porridge would be nice for breakfast, how about that? I’ve tried chicken, fish, pork and beef porridges and they are all good. Have you tried steamed custard egg with minced pork? Quite nice if you use chicken stock to mix with the egg. Can add 1-2 spinach leaves too. Besides porridges, I also do puree and mash potato of a variety of veggies and meats for her lunch and dinner. Throw in a fruit or yoghurt as dessert. The usual stuff :)

Hmm, has the hole in the teat widened due to wear and tear? (I’m assuming that the teats were the same since 4 months.) Maybe that’s the reason behind the choking. I’ve switched to level 3 for Hannah for about 1-2 months now. I made my decision to change based on her ability to suck stronger. Wow, after the change to level 3, she could finish her milk within a few minutes.

Recently, I discovered that giving hannah something for her hands to play with during diaper change keeps her still! I’d give her the diaper rash cream tube and that would make her very happy. Or another cream stored in a box could give her endless fun as she rattled the thing away. :) Thank God!!!
