Anything can be a toy

There’s a particular sentence that whenever I hear Ling say somewhere in the house, I’ll cringe in fear. And the sentence goes like this:

“Dear, can you come over here?

It usually only means one thing: because Ling can’t physically come over in person e.g. to the work room where I’m at, it’s probably something to do with Hannah, and it’s likely to be another baby-esque accident. One such happened again on Thursday when Hannah did a massive carpet bomb of her diaper. Even Ling was surprised at the volume of, er, ‘output’ possible from a small tot. It seemed that Hannah’s intestinal tracts must had been working on overdrive!

In any case, a furious body cleanup, a third baby bath for of the day and diaper and clothes change late, there was no trace evidence of the massive bombing that’d just occur. So we set Hannah down to play on our bed with a Nike Dri-Fit shirt I’ve got, but which Hannah hasn’t played with before. It’s terrifically fun to see her interact with new toys and items.:)

  1. Hey guys, I think you’re both doing great, handling baby on your own! :) I’m still at my parents’ place, quite reliant on mum and helper to handle Baby G! Two things I can’t yet do on my own – bathe Gabby, and pacify her when she brings the house down, sigh. Diaper changing, I think I get an A- for catching her in mid-poo! Also proud to say, I managed to put her to sleep in my arms for once today!

Happy 9 months Hannah! That’s how long you were in mummy’s tummy too :) God bless you and mummy & daddy!

  2. Thanks too, Lisa :) No worries about managing baby G ya. Both Joerg and yourself will find your own customised methods in due time :) Jia you!

  3. Ok I have a question I need to ask the expert mummy… We’re having real problems feeding Gabrielle with formula using the bottle. Somehow she’s having problems drinking formula from the bottle- we’ve tried Pigeon, Avent, and Evenflo bottles. All have the same effect of making her very frustrated and ending up crying. Only when we pour in small amounts at a time into the Pigeon bottle is she able to really drink the formula. With breastmilk in the bottle, no problem at all. We give her formula only at night, in hopes that she will last longer through the night. Do you use a different teat when you bottle-feed hannah with formula?

  4. Hi Lisa,

Me no expert la. Just have lotsa comments now and then about babycare. Hee hee :D

It could be tricky to determine the factor that’s causing baby G’s rejection of the bottle with formula. At least she’s drinking some amounts at a time.

I started with Avent but Hannah didn’t take to the bottle all the time. Thought that may be the teat was too hard for her or it required a lot of energy to suck. I read about Bfree bottles (it is almost the same as Dr Brown’s) and bought 2 big bottles to try out. They worked. I know that this brand has good ventilation system: no negative pressure build-up in the bottle when the baby is sucking. Hannah has been drinking well from this bottle eversince. BTW, it is almost the most expensive bottle around here. There’s only perhaps one downside to using this bottle – there are 7 parts to wash and sterilise! I managed to eliminate one part, i.e. the tube for temperature.

Another possible reason to Baby G rejecting the bottle could be due to the rate of flow. Between the breast milk and formula, is there a difference in the volume used? The larger the volume, the faster and stronger the flow I think. My science here might be wrong though.

Lastly, it could be the brand of formula used. I started with similac but later found that Mamil Gold tasted better. :) And the latter is less heaty (i.e. she didn’t constipate with that formula)

  5. Thanks Ling… yeah we think it may be the pressure buildup too, but funny thing is, there are fewer incidences of this problem when joerg does the bottle-feeding! Very mysterious. I’m now tempted by your Bfree bottles… anythingto make the feeding experience more pleasant for baby and us! I should have seen your message earlier and looked for it at the baby fair today.

    The adventure continues…

    :)
