The Lion, the Aussies, and the Conservationist

There’s a heartwarming video that’s been echoing throughout the web and making the rounds for a week now. It’s worth a watch and about two Aussies, a lion, and a year in between them.

It’s times like these you’d rather not have human children but these creatures instead—though you’d need to first get past the part that these big cats can easily bite your head off. :P

You may notice too though that the video looks pretty dated. In fact, this story starts from 1969—nearly 40 years ago now—and the video here takes place a year later from that point. And while the video subtext presents a most warm nuzzling happy feel to the story, there is a seriously tragic ending. George Adamson, the conservationist who rehabilitated Christian back into the wild and the fellow with the bushy beard in the video, was himself shot and killed by poachers while trying to help a tourist years later.

Further reading here (a summarized version of the story), here (about Adamson’s involvement) and here. In the last link, John Rendall, one of the two Aussies, relates the story shown in the Youtube video retrospectively, and is a must read.
