I didn\u2019t notice it was a church initially until I saw an elderly gentlemen putting up notices at a board on the lawn:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8871-BackBay\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8871-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8871BackBay1.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The First Baptist Church was established along Commonwealth Avenue in 1882 and architect Henry H. Richardson\u2019s first major designs in the Romanesque-style. One of its distinctive features is its tall, ivy-covered tower:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8872-BackBay\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8872-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8872BackBay1.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8881-BackBay\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8881-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8881BackBay1.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the top of the square tower is a frieze and decorative arches with an overhanging roof, and designed by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Bartholdi, a sculptor who also created the Statue of Liberty .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8875-BackBay\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8875-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8875BackBay1.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth Avenue stretches on both sides of Clarendon Street, and it being Boston\u2019s first fully planned neighborhood is stylized after the city of Paris\u2019 elegant boulevards. The Avenue runs around a long strip of grassy mall, adorned with statues of William Garrison and John Glover among others. I stopped at Trinity Church for a visit after this point (see next blog post). But after leaving that church, I continued along Dartmouth Street and past Copley Square lied the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, Forbes three-star, AAA four-diamond hotel.
