On the west side is the Back Bay District, an upmarket residential and super high-class commercial area of the city. I reached the area past noon on Sunday after my visit to the New England Aquarium, alighting from the T-train at the Back Bay subway stop.<\/p>\n<p>Walking down Dartmouth Street first, I came to Copley Square with Trinity Church (which will have its own blog post here!) on my right, and the Boston Public Library &#8211; McKim Building on the left. I really wanted to visit this library, but it was closed on Sunday. I\u2019ll probably come by on a weekday evening soon. Bates Hall is inside it with an incredible coffered ceiling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8819-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8819BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8819-BackBay\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_9023-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_9023BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_9023-BackBay\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the intersection between Boylston and Dartmout streets was the Old South Church (also called the <strong><em>New<\/em><\/strong> South Church!), a smaller church than Trinity but no less impressive. Sunday services had just ended, so there was a steady stream of worshippers leaving the church premise:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8833-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8833BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8833-BackBay\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8836-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8836BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8836-BackBay\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8838-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8838BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8838-BackBay\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Old\/New South Church was built in 1874, Gothic-styled and also a national historical landmark site, and for the United Church of Christ denomination in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing on Bolyston then Exeter Streets, I got to Newbury St. \u2013 a stretch that runs approximately along the east-west cardinal direction.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8848-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8848BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8848-BackBay\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8844-BackBay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8844BackBay.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8844-BackBay\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Newbury St. stretch is touted as one of the most expensive streets in the world with high-end boutiques and stores.
