{"id":9794,"date":"2010-06-14T05:27:13","date_gmt":"2010-06-13T21:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/?p=9794"},"modified":"2010-06-17T01:33:40","modified_gmt":"2010-06-16T17:33:40","slug":"freedom-trail-part-6-old-ironsides-uss-cassin-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/14\/freedom-trail-part-6-old-ironsides-uss-cassin-young\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom Trail Part 6: Old Ironsides &amp; USS Cassin Young"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After crossing Charlestown Bridge, and continued walking along Chelsea Street past some really swanking looking residences, and for quite a distance until finally arriving at the Charlestown Navy Yard to visit two ships: the USS Constitution, nicknamed \u201cOld Ironsides\u201d, and the USS Cassin Young, a destroyer that saw service in World War II.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8453-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8453-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8453freedomTrailUSSConstitution.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/>&#160;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8456-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8456-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8456freedomTrailUSSConstitution.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship was launched in 1797 and served in the war of 1812 against Great Britain, capturing many merchant ships and defeating several British warships, earning her nickname.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8459-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8459-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8459freedomTrailUSSConstitution.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the ship\u2019s age of more than 200 years old, it\u2019s still remains fully afloat and capable of sailing under its own power \u2013 just incredible! I didn\u2019t get to climb up the masts though. And though you can\u2019t see from the still images here (but it\u2019s very obvious from the HD footage I shot of the vessel), there was a steady drizzle by this juncture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8461-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8461-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8461freedomTrailUSSConstitution.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/>&#160;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8466-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8466-freedomTrail-USSConstitution\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8466freedomTrailUSSConstitution.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the drizzle, you can see that it didn\u2019t deter some visitors from visiting the two vessels. Below is the USS Cassin Young, a 2050 ton destroyer named in memory after Captain Cassin Young for his heroism at Pearl Harbor in 1941, and who was killed in action at the Battle of Guadalcanal the next year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8467-freedomTrail-CassinYoung\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8467-freedomTrail-CassinYoung\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8467freedomTrailCassinYoung.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship saw action in 1944 to 1945 against the Japanese Imperial navy, and is equipped with ship to ship guns, AA-guns and torpedoes. Many ship miniatures in the museum. I\u2019ll write a next post about the whacked out weather here in Boston, but as far as that Saturday afternoon was concerned, a visit to Bunker Hill to finish up my exploration of the Freedom Trail was a no-go.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"map-08\" border=\"0\" alt=\"map-08\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/map08.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Real disappointing. I\u2019ll blog about it soon.:)<\/p>\n<p>This concludes my series of posts of the Freedom Trail. It took me about 4 hours to get this far, though the guides suggested at 2 hours is sufficient. But I really took my time, took a lot of pictures and videos. The trail is incredible and entirely doable on foot once you\u2019re equipped with good walking shoes.
