{"id":9708,"date":"2010-06-14T00:30:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-13T16:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/14\/freedom-trail-old-city-hall-new-book-store-old-corner-bookstore\/"},"modified":"2018-07-14T16:06:10","modified_gmt":"2018-07-14T08:06:10","slug":"freedom-trail-old-city-hall-new-book-store-old-corner-bookstore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/14\/freedom-trail-old-city-hall-new-book-store-old-corner-bookstore\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom Trail: Old City Hall, New Book Store &amp; Old Corner Bookstore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>King\u2019s Chanel and Burying Ground lied along Tremont Street, so I backtracked towards School Street until the intersection of the street and Province Street where the Old City Hall sat:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8292-freedomTrail-OldCityHall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8292freedomTrailOldCityHall.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8292-freedomTrail-OldCityHall\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This building served as Boston\u2019s City Hall for over a century starting from the mid 1800s, and has a French-styled facade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8294-freedomTrail-OldCityHall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8294freedomTrailOldCityHall.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8294-freedomTrail-OldCityHall\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8296-freedomTrail-OldCityHall\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8296freedomTrailOldCityHall.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8296-freedomTrail-OldCityHall\" width=\"275\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a statue of Benjamin Franklin on the left hand side of the compound, with another statue of Josiah Quincy, the second mayor of Boston, on the other side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8302-freedomTrail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8302freedomTrail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8302-freedomTrail\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continuing just a little down School Street was Starbucks, which had a lot of its stores around the city. Sorely tempted to go get a drink but I didn\u2019t. The budget tourist.:)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8304-freedomTrail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8304freedomTrail.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8304-freedomTrail\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I thought the above institution\u2019s name was fun: it sat along School Street! These days, to start a POSBank account I think you need a lot more money than that.:)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8306-freedomTrail-OldCornerBookstore\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_8306freedomTrailOldCornerBookstore.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_8306-freedomTrail-OldCornerBookstore\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the intersection of School and Washington Streets sat the Old Corner Bookstore, which was first opened as a drug store in 1718 before turning into a book store in 1829. There wasn\u2019t much of a crowd at this time \u2013 late Saturday morning \u2013 and it was a welcomed chance browsing books without the usual rancor and noise from the similar store at Wheelock Place back at home.
