There’s a lesson that I never learn: and it’s “Never repair your computer when you’re sick.”<\/p>\n
Why? Because I start bungling and forgetting things – and typically personal data gets lost somewhere in the mess.<\/p>\n
Ling messaged yesterday morning to say that her PC had started acting up. So, after doing a diagnosis this morning, I determined that the hard disk controller had failed on the motherboard and messaged Ling that I was going to go pick up replacement parts from Sim Lim Square to assemble her a new PC, and that all her data on the hard disks were safe.<\/p>\n
The new PC assembly and disassembly of the old one to move components about went pretty smoothly. However, I thought I had listed in my head every data folder from Ling’s PC I needed to backup: but I forgot that Windows doesn’t let you copy files out from a user’s AppData folder unless you’re properly logged in (which I couldn’t to begin with).<\/p>\n
Techno babble aside, Ling’s email folder disappeared somewhere in the transition. It was only after a reformat and a reinstallation of Windows when I realized, “er… oh – oh…”.<\/p>\n
Who to blame? Well, I’m still sick and feverish, that’s why. And of course I should have realized that I should have saved this repair job for next week or something.<\/p>\n
At least only the emails from Jan 2010 onwards were lost from Outlook, and even a good portion of those lost emails copies have been autoforwarded regularly to another email account of hers that I set up. Also, all her work files, pictures etc. are OK.<\/p>\n
