To sum up in a sentence what the image quality in the E-PL1 looks like to me: it’s not quite as good as the images off a D300, but still loads better than the Panasonic LZ8. In short, no surprises and the E-PL1 performs about up to expectations. From what other owners have been reporting, the Olympus Pen m4/3 really shine when paired with a wide aperture lens, like the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 pancake. In the mean time, a couple of illustrative pictures:

Both were taken at 1/60 and f3.5, but with head-on flash output and bounced up the ceiling respectively. Interestingly, the E-PL1 dialed up the ISO in the second picture too: from 200 to 500 in fact. And in the bounced shot, the light output’s rather uneven with congregation in the upper reaches. Looks like an independent flash gun is going to be needed for any sort of serious flash bounce work..

Next couple of shots are 100% crops of my recently acquired stack of travel guides:

The first picture was at ISO200, f4.4, 1/2 (!) second exposure.
