{"id":685,"date":"2008-08-02T06:21:22","date_gmt":"2008-08-01T22:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/?p=685"},"modified":"2008-08-02T06:21:22","modified_gmt":"2008-08-01T22:21:22","slug":"killer-hornets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2008\/08\/02\/killer-hornets\/","title":{"rendered":"Killer hornets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ling has been rewatching the Planet Earth blu-ray set I bought her for Valentine&#8217;s Day <a href=\"https:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/2008\/02\/20\/treehugging\/\">several months ago<\/a>. The series is still amazing even though this is repeated viewing.<\/p>\n<p>Thing is, the natural world isn&#8217;t all so hunky dory sunshine and rainbows. In fact, some of it can be downright gruesome, say for example the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_giant_hornet\">Asian giant hornet<\/a>, one of animal kingdom&#8217;s deadly insects. There&#8217;s a paragraph in the Wikipedia entry that describes how just a few dozen of these fellows can devastate an entire beehive i.e. slaughter every one of them. And we&#8217;re talking like 30,000 bees against 30 hornets.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video of what I mean. It&#8217;s not for the fainthearted at all or those who&#8217;ll cringe at how the food chain really works in the animal kingdom.
