{"id":6409,"date":"2009-10-26T18:50:27","date_gmt":"2009-10-26T10:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/?p=6409"},"modified":"2009-10-26T18:50:27","modified_gmt":"2009-10-26T10:50:27","slug":"lost-in-translation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2009\/10\/26\/lost-in-translation\/","title":{"rendered":"Lost in Translation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the preparation for my upcoming staff-exchange trip to Japan in December this year, I\u2019ve been translating about 30 hours worth of lecture material into, well, Japanese. The students I\u2019ll be lecturing do know English, but \u2013 or so I\u2019ve been advised \u2013 not with the same level of written and reading fluency than the average Singaporean of similar age, no matter what Ms. Ris \u2018Boomz\u2019 Low\u2019s apologists would like you to believe.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of colleagues jokingly said I should find time in the next 5 weeks before the trip to learn Japanese. Yeah \u2013 if I only had the time after my normal teaching hours + two current research projects (one in progress, one in planning) I\u2019m also lead investigator for + a bunch of other student-centric activities that span the entire year.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019re two things that make my job easier though. One is the freely available web site-based translation tools. I remembered first using them at the early days of the web before the millennium, and they were already very useful in translating the odd foreign language word or phrase. The tools these days can translate entire paragraphs of text.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what a typical slide of mine looks like right now (the topic is on the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Software_metrics\">software metrics<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" title=\"blog-translation2\" src=\"https:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/blogtranslation2.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-translation2\" width=\"571\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The translation accuracy using that site for single words or very short phrases isn\u2019t too bad, but for paragraphs it can be spotty though. I\u2019m assuming that this is due to the additional layer of statement parsing that\u2019s necessary at application end to decipher the structure of a statement and its meaning before getting to the translation bits, and that layer adds a degree of variability to accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the second thing has come in to help: a Japanese colleague in my faculty has helped me look through each slide of my lecture series as I finish them and done the edits to clear out all the embarrassing bits. Like the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<em>Challenges in constructing software<\/em>\u201d using the web site-based translation tells me it\u2019s \u201c\u6311\u6226\u304c\u30bd\u30d5\u30c8\u30a6\u30a7\u30a2\u3092\u4f5c\u6210\u3059\u308b\u201d. Unfortunately that actually means \u201c<em>A challenge makes software<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After her edit, it now reads \u201c\u30bd\u30d5\u30c8\u30a6\u30a7\u30a2\u69cb\u7bc9\u306b\u3042\u305f\u308b\u30c1\u30e3\u30ec\u30f3\u30b8 \u201c, which means <em>\u201cA challenge equal to the software construction<\/em>\u201d according to reverse translation.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely sounds better!
