Funnily, I got into this series by way of the film first, so it was like watching the last episode before the first.

The film had all the nine crew characters back in their roles, and enjoyed a much larger production budget than normal TV production allows. It was had story and plot points that significantly changed the story progression from the TV series – i.e. key characters were killed in the film – which is very unusual for films based off TV series. Just think of Star Trek.

I liked the film a lot when I first watched it in 2005, but I didn’t get to rent the series from Blockbuster as I was too busy finishing up my thesis then. When I was back in Singapore, the series wasn’t available for rental here too – that is until recently when the home DVD rental service I’m on finally acquired the 14 episodes. So, since last night, Ling and myself have been watching the first episodes.

Like so much of the other stuff I watch on TV at least, Firefly won’t appeal to everyone. It’s not grand space action at least with exploding ships and dog fights everywhere that you’d find in Battlestar Galactica, and certainly not a series with Alien of the Week showcasing c/o Star Trek. But persons who enjoy wild west-esque stories and well-developed characters, watching Firefly and Serenity are pleasant ways to enjoying evenings.

And oh yes – Ling likes the series too!

Despite that the series comprised just 14 episodes before it was cancelled, the series was commercially very successful on DVD sales, and spawned a film called Serenity in 2005 that continued the stories that ended after the 14th episode in

Read More Serenity and Firefly – Part 2

[6,10

post-5454","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-at-home","category-entertainment","wpcat-6-id","wpcat-10-id
["GET
