<\/a><\/p>\nThe broad strokes of the itinerary:<\/p>\n
Nanning Arrival<\/strong>: We’ll land in Nanning<\/strong>, where our guide will meet us before driving us to Mingshi. The journey is about 210km and should take around 3\u20134 hours, arriving just before sunset. There are only a handful of direct flights from Singapore to Nanning, with Scoot thankfully offering an early afternoon arrival. We did consider flying into Chongqing instead, which has better flight options, but that would likely have resulted in a loop itinerary that both started and ended there.<\/p>\n Mingshi (2 Nights)<\/strong>: Mingshi is regarded as one of Guangxi’s most beautiful karst regions and lies close to the Vietnam border. Had we chosen Northern Vietnam instead, we would probably have seen similar limestone scenery. The area is famous for its towering karst peaks, winding rivers and peaceful farming villages. Highlights include Detian Waterfall on the China\u2013Vietnam border, Tongna Yuwan, and exploring Mingshi Scenic Area, including a bamboo raft ride.<\/p>\n Libo (2 Nights)<\/strong>: Crossing into Guizhou Province, we’ll head to Libo, home to one of China’s best-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We’ll be visiting two of China’s finest karst nature reserves: the Xiaoqikong and Daqikong Scenic Areas.<\/p>\n Zhaoxing (2 Nights)<\/strong>: Zhaoxing offers a change of pace, combining mountain scenery with the heritage of the Dong ethnic minority. We’ll visit Zhaoxing, Tang’an Dong Village and Xiage Dong Village. Windhorse’s original itinerary included several more minority villages, but we pared it down to these three, as they apparently offer the greatest variety of scenery, especially around Tang’an and Xiage, where terraced fields and rural landscapes are the highlights.<\/p>\n Zhenyuan (2 Nights)<\/strong>: Next comes the riverside town of Zhenyuan, one of Guizhou’s best-preserved ancient settlements. Highlights include Zhusheng Bridge, Qinglong Cave, and an evening cruise along the Wuyang River. We’ll also spend a day exploring nearby Mount Yuntai, known for its striking white dolomite formations rising above peaceful forests and valleys.<\/p>\n Fanjingshan (2 Nights)<\/strong>: One of the major highlights of this trip will be Mount Fanjingshan, another UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its dramatic rock formations. Weather permitting, we’ll also visit the Red Clouds Golden Summit, Yunshe Tujia Village, Zhaisha Dong Village, and the forested Yamu Gorge with its clear streams and waterfalls.<\/p>\n Wulong (3 Nights)<\/strong>: Wulong was made particularly famous by Michael Bay’s Transformers<\/em> movies (LOL). More importantly though, it features prominently in almost every Chongqing itinerary, and unlike many scenic spots in China, what you see in the photos genuinely looks like what you’ll experience in real life\u2014at least judging from the countless YouTube videos I’ve watched. The region is home to spectacular natural stone bridges, deep limestone gorges and extensive cave systems. We’ll be visiting the Three Natural Bridges, Fairy Mountain, Longshuixia Gorge and Furong Cave. Windhorse initially planned just a single night here, but we requested three nights instead so we could really slow down and soak in everything the region has to offer.<\/p>\n Chongqing (2 Nights)<\/strong>: like many other trips we do, we always chiong and begin immediately upon arrival, then in the last 2-3 days, wind down in a big city for the girls to get their retail therapy.<\/p>\n Compared with last December’s Yunnan\u2013Western Sichuan trip, we shouldn’t be spending nearly as much time on the road, as the distances between bases are generally shorter. Better still, there are far fewer accommodation changes. Last year’s trip included several single-night stays, which made it much more tiring with the constant unpacking and repacking.
