This cave system had been closed for 2.5 years for safety upgrades, and we couldn’t find notices informing us with certainty when it would be re-opened. As luck would have it, it had just reopened at the end of May.

The Manjanggul Lava Tube at 7 km is one of the longest lava tunnels known in the world, though just a 1 km section is open to the public. So, a 2 km walk in all from the entrance to the terminal point open to visitors, then back out. The cave was formed thousands of years ago when flowing lava created underground channels, and there are numerous info boards in the tunnel explaining how lava flow creates the natural patterns on the walls, as well as unusual formations. You can allocate about an hour to visit this cave system, and you’d probably take far less time if you brisk walk the path. We took 35 minutes: about 25 minutes in to soak in the sights, and then another 10 minutes of walking very purposefully the way out LOL.

There were quite a number of visitors, but the tunnel is long, so it didn’t feel crowded.

The section that’s opened to the public apparently isn’t the start of the entire tunnel, but a middle section.

Entrance to the section opened to the public.
