The planning for this itinerary has been pretty different from the others I’ve done over the years. Aside from my use of GenAI tools to check, analyse and screen the itinerary for dead spots and inefficiencies, this one trip will essentially cover just about all of the island’s key unique geology and ecosystems. So, the sort of thing that would really interest the wife, and not so much for the kids. For me, I’m largely on this trip as planner and also because of the photographic, and hopefully aerial videography, opportunities this trip would provide!

The key geology and ecosystems of Jeju and what we’d be covering in each are:

A dormant volcano – Hallasan – that has not erupted for just over 1,000 years. Hard not to include in the itinerary, given that it’s the island’s key feature!

Lava tube systems, where molten lava flowed underground and hardened into tunnels. The more famous one is Manjanggul Lava Tube that we’d be visiting, assuming that it’s re-opened to the public in June [it’s currently closed].

Oreums, or small volcanic cones. There are literally hundreds on the island. We’d be visiting two key ones: Seongsan Ilchulbong, and Saebyeol Oreum.

Dramatic volcanic coastlines that are lava cliffs shaped by the sea. We’d be visiting Jusangjeolli Cliffs, and Yongmeori Coast.

Lava forests that grow on porous lava rock, nurturing opportunities for unique insect ecosystems like fireflies. We’d be visiting Cheongsu Gotjawal Forest specifically for opportunities to see fireflies.

Haenyeo divers i.e. the female free divers who harvest seafood without oxygen tanks. This was completely absent from our 2006 visit, so we made sure to include it this time, with two opportunities to see them.

Waterfalls. Three are in the itinerary: Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (we visited this in 2006), Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, and the unique Jeongbang Waterfall as the waterfall flows directly into the sea.

Scenic coastal walking trails. The island has a number of interconnected coastal trails that run around the circumference of the island. We’d be visiting two: Jeju Olle Trail route 7, and the Handam Coastal Walk.

Hydrangea-lined coastal roads. We included the Gimnyeong Hydrangea coastal path, and two other places where hydrangeas are expected to be seen.

Oreums in Jeju [source: Wiki, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oreum#/media/File:KOCIS_Jeju_Island_(5983304062).jpg]

Next: a quick post on equipment that will be coming along for this trip!

We’d be travelling on our Jeju trip soon.
