{"id":348,"date":"2008-05-27T12:42:51","date_gmt":"2008-05-27T04:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/?p=348"},"modified":"2008-05-27T12:42:51","modified_gmt":"2008-05-27T04:42:51","slug":"lost-luggage-and-found-cake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2008\/05\/27\/lost-luggage-and-found-cake\/","title":{"rendered":"Lost Luggage and Found Cake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">The day before my <a href=\"http:\/\/fumoffu.chekyang.com\/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&amp;g2_itemId=176\">departure for Bangkok<\/a> went by more quickly than I anticipated.<span> <\/span>Yang and Ling each had busy days, and I once again whiled away the morning at the The Rivervale awaiting word on the status of my misdirected luggage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">Sunday at the airport\u2019s Lost and Found offices, the representative told me my baggage would arrive from JFK to Changi early Monday morning and to expect a call to set a time for delivery.<span> <\/span>Monday when I called their baggage-trace hotline the person on the phone told me with confidence that my luggage would arrive Tuesday morning.<span> <\/span>When on Tuesday my baggage did not arrive and the service respondent assured me Wednesday would be the day of delivery, I took a trip to Singapore Air\u2019s offices on Orchard Road to speak in-person.<span> <\/span>(This was a great excuse to take in the sights, do some window-shopping and grab something to eat.)  I was quickly put at ease by the service representative who, during his phone conversation with the trace hotline, practically cracked me up as his needled whoever it was on the other line.  &#8220;If you do not receive your luggage tomorrow, sir, call and demand compensation.  Here is my name and my card.&#8221;  Fair enough!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">On my way home I stopped at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.com.sg\/\">Guardian<\/a> to grab some hair conditioner.<span> <\/span>Even in the U.S. my senses fail me when browsing through the health &amp; care aisles. <span> <\/span>A misstep is bound to occur, and before I know it I\u2019m in the feminine hygiene section before reaching my intended destination.<span> <\/span>In Singapore, however, I can feel the weight of clerk\u2019s and attendant\u2019s eyes as I wander aimlessly through one aisle to the next.<span> <\/span>So unlike in the U.S., here I\u2019m content to ask for help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">I approached a man in his twenties busy with stocking what appeared to be bottles of shampoo.<span> <\/span>The hair conditioner could not be far off I reckoned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cExcuse me, where is the men\u2019s hair conditioner?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cAh, no idea,\u201d he said.<span> <\/span>\u201cCannot English, lah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">I smiled.<span> <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s okay, I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">I turned to inspect the products to my left, but the conversation didn\u2019t stop there.<span> <\/span>\u201cCould be there,\u201d he said, pointing to the upper shelves on our left.<span> <\/span>\u201cOr even be maybe down there.\u201d He pointed down toward the bottom shelves on which sat bottles plastered with images of smiling Asian women, their hair soft and glossy.<span> <\/span>His English was better than he thought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<span> <\/span>I kneeled down to inspect his suggestion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cBut cannot English.<span> <\/span>So sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cSure, no problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cI speak Chinese only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">I nodded politely as I scanned through the selection before me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cIs just a matter of practice,\u201d he said, placing the last of the stock from his basket on the shelf in front of him.<span> <\/span>\u201cI must learn to apply myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">I felt like saying \u201cHan na!\u201d<span> <\/span>Clearly his English was better than that spoken by some of my friends in the States!<span> <\/span>After reciting a Shakespeare sonnet in perfect iambic pentameter, he broke away to the back office.<span> <\/span>Meanwhile, I settled on searching through the feminine hair care products looking for something neutral in scent.<span> <\/span>A lady from the counter approached me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cYou need help, sir?\u201d<span> <\/span>From her tone she sounded like no problem was too large to conquer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cYes,<span> <\/span>I\u2019m looking for hair conditioner.<span> <\/span>I can\u2019t find anything that doesn\u2019t smell like fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cOh,\u201d she said, kneeling down to join me, \u201cyou want to smell like fruit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cNo,\u201d I said, shaking my head, \u201c<em>not<\/em> like fruit.<span> <\/span>These all smell like strawberry, papaya, or apples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cOkay.<span> <\/span>You want natural?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">That was the word I was looking for.<span> <\/span>\u201cDefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cFor dyed or treated hair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cFor damaged or thinning hair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">This gave me pause.<span> <\/span>\u201cNo,\u201d I said, reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cThen this, perhaps?\u201d<span> <\/span>She grabbed a slim, plain-looking bottle from the shelf and opened it part way.<span> <\/span>\u201cSmell, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">\u201cThat is <em>so<\/em> natural,\u201d I said.<span> <\/span>\u201cI\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">It turns out the product brand is Asience, its motto: For Progressive Asian Beauties.<span> <\/span>Now I <em>might<\/em> be progressive, but I am not Asian, much less a beauty.<span> <\/span>But this goes to show how even buying hair conditioner in Singapore for an ang moh can be an amiable little adventure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-349 alignright\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"blog-magnets\" src=\"https:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/blog-magnets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"325\" \/>Only on Wednesday, a full 72-plus hours after my arrival to Singapore, did I receive my luggage.<span> <\/span>That meant the small gifts I bought Yang and Ling had arrived, too.<span> <\/span>Now these were very, very small items, mere tokens of appreciation, some of which included <a href=\"http:\/\/fumoffu.chekyang.com\/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&amp;g2_itemId=173\">fridge magnet<\/a>s.<span> <\/span>Yes, you read correctly.<span> <\/span>Yang mentioned before I left for Singapore that he and Ling were in the process of decorating their refrigerator, so I donated six thematically dissimilar magnets to their cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">However, I couldn\u2019t just come bearing fridge magnets.<span> <\/span>So I also bought a heavy Mario Batal Italian cookbook and <em>Blade Runner<\/em> Collector\u2019s Edition on BluRay.<span> <\/span>I\u2019d need more, though.<span> <\/span>While killing time in Compass Point during the morning of my arrival, Yang commented on how much Ling liked the macha macha cake at Bread Talk. <span> <\/span>(He in fact bought her the exact same cake for her birthday.) <span> <\/span>I had to admit, it sure looked good.<span> <\/span>This would be the perfect show of appreciation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">But I had little time.<span> <\/span>Yang and Ling were set to arrive home quite soon, and with my departure to Bangkok looming near, this would be my last opportunity.<span> <\/span>So I ran to the Buangkok MRT terminal, boarded the train, minded the gap, alighted in Sengkang, and rushed through the brief link to the mall.<span> <\/span>Happy, happy.<span> <\/span>I had plenty of time, though I\u2019d need be delicate when transporting the cake back to The Rivervale.<span> <\/span>The human traffic was particularly high, so I took no chances\u2014I\u2019d walk from Compass Point mall back home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-350 alignright\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"blog-macha-macha\" src=\"https:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/blog-macha-macha.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"322\" \/>Only upon arriving home and placing the cake in the refrigerator did I remember what I\u2019d forgotten:<span> <\/span>gift wrapping and a Thank You card.<span> <\/span>I sprinted back to Buangkok MRT, boarded, forgot about that stupid gap, alighted once more in Sengkang, and stood in line at the basement-level grocery store with an armful of gift wrap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">But when I got back home I had no time to apply care and consideration toward the wrapping of the gifts.<span> <\/span>If I was a skilled gift wrapper like Ann, perhaps I could\u2019ve managed, but I\u2019m a complete novice.<span> <\/span>And beyond that, I was sweating like Oprah in front of a buffet stand.<span> <\/span>So into the gift bags did the presents go, with the gift wrap crinkled and stuffed haphazardly behind them, and loose ribbon dangling festively from the opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">All in all, it felt great giving gifts.<span> <\/span>I should do it more often.<span> <\/span>In fact, to haul all the stuff I bought in Bangkok back home I\u2019ll have to buy another luggage bag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt;\">But no macha macha cake\u2014too messy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The day before my departure for Bangkok went by more quickly than I anticipated.
