{"id":30822,"date":"2019-11-13T07:11:19","date_gmt":"2019-11-12T23:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/?p=30822"},"modified":"2026-03-14T19:24:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T11:24:59","slug":"5-days-in-shanghai-city-exploration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2019\/11\/13\/5-days-in-shanghai-city-exploration\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Days in Shanghai &#8211; City Exploration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We were supposed to have arrived in the mid-afternoon, but the flight from Changi took off an hour late + customs clearance was very slow, with the half-dozen immigration counters taking a while to clear the hundreds of persons arriving into the city at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Most seriously though: my luggage did not arrive + one of our party&#8217;s pieces of luggage was damaged during handling. That aside, our itinerary was quite packed. Apart from the places I&#8217;ve posted about, we also visited a local supermarket to see how technology is used, Nanjing Road, Tianzhifang, Xintiandi, and also Shanghai Museum. Unlike back home, you actually get to select i.e. catch the specimen you want. See a crab that looks like it&#8217;s destined for your dinner table? Like this old lady who was trying to net a fish &#8211; but another one jumped right out of her net and onto the floor &#8211; causing some mild panic! The 5km stretch offers hundreds of shops and malls &#8211; though the upmarket shops and boutiques along the main street also show eye-watering prices. Many, many small shops connected through maze-like alleys and walkways. Lined with restaurants and boutiques that are for the rich and famous.
