It was well that I placed the Mt. Misen ascent and descent as the first activity of my trip to Itsukushima. It started drizzling from noon time, and though it wasn’t full-blown rain, it would have made the trail that bit more slippery. Also, the island was significantly more crowded by the time I’d returned back to Miyajima village, with the ferries offloading large numbers of visitors each trip.<\/p>\n

When the rain came, the shops all brought out their baskets of umbrellas. I bought one for \u00a5<\/span>400\/SGD5.10.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The real natives of Itsukushima. Visitors are reminded that these are wild animals, and not to feed them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Itsukushima Shrine offers a one-way path through the shrine, and was seeing lots of visitors \u2014 many because it’s a unique experience and one of the most important places on the island, others I’m guessing because they wanted to escape the rain. There’s an admission fee though. I opted out from the visit altogether, preferring to take pictures from the outside.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Quite a lot of students around. I wonder if there’s a school on the island, or if this was an excursion.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Most eateries and restaurants had long lunch queues at this point, so I ducked into a fairly empty restaurant for a quick lunch \u2014 and had just about the worst pork cutlet set I’ve had in Singapore and Japan. And expensive at \u00a5<\/span>1,650\/SGD21 even. Clearly, the Japanese can produce bland food. Nonetheless, this local resident was eyeing more lunch. Yes, I know they are herbivores, but who knows really if these Miyajima residents have evolved!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The drizzle was on and off \u2014 this was about 1:32PM.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I’d initially planned to stay on Itsukushima till late afternoon, but the legs were not cooperating \u2014 so it was an early return back to Hiroshima city to check into The Royal Park Hiroshima Riverside Hotel.
