The city of Fukuoka is easily walkable, and I certainly did a good deal of that on the first day of the trip. By the time my legs had pretty much given up on any more walking at about 6:30PM last night, I’d clocked in more than 21,000 steps and 15km of walking in about eight hours.<\/p>\n

Aside from the parks and ruins, the day’s exploration included the Tenjin area, Canal City, and also the Fukuoka Freedom Night Market<\/a> at Seiryu Park. The Asian-styled night market is seasonal and only opens on weekends. It was already teeming with crowds in the early evening, offering a variety of local street foods as well as live performances.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of cafes along the main street boulevards, and yes \u2014 you can get your Starbucks fix easily here.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The sunny and clear weather really brought out the greens in every photo I’ve taken so far.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Unlike the other cosmopolitan cities in Japan, there are just a sparing number of very tall buildings in Fukuoka.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Momentary respite from the humidity by hiding out at Tokyu Hands store @ JR Hakata Station with a mocha frapp\u00e9. Bliss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Canal City, a large shopping and entertainment complex about a ten minute walk from my hotel. There was a live performance featuring a rock band, with crowds already gathered for it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Quite picturesque, though also quite crowded as this was Sunday evening.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Many makeshift food stalls at the Freedom Night Market, with the locals already tucking in early in the evening.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This should be around or near Gion Street I think, as I was gradually making my way back to the hotel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
