Besides the 35mm primes, there’s another focal length that I really like for casual photography – and it’s 28mm. I didn’t own a 28mm prime during my Nikon DSLR days, but I had one such during over the 7 years I used the micro four-thirds system exclusively for photography. That lens was the Panasonic 14mm f2.5<\/a>, a fan favorite among enthusiasts – no doubt on account of its tiny pancake size. The lens when mounted on an Olympus E-PLX camera turned the entire package easily portable, and fun to carry around to take pictures like these:<\/p>\n

A 28mm prime wasn’t my priority lens acquisition last year when I migrated over the the Sony FE system. But now that things have settled quite a bit and I’ve figured out my comfort zones in using the Sony A73, went about looking for a 28mm prime for the system. Not surprisingly, there aren’t as many options for 28mm compared to the much more popular focal lengths of 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. In fact, there are seem to just be two at the moment: a horrendously expensive Sigma 28mm f1.4 DG HSM<\/a>, and a much more affordable Sony FE 28mm f2<\/a>. In yet another instance of how sometimes bargains can be had on Singapore island here, the recommended retail price here<\/a> for it is SGD619, compared to Amazon’s list price of SGD641:<\/p>\n

I’ve had the 28mm now for two months, and have enjoyed using it as a general purpose lens. That it also shoots wider than the two 35mm primes I also take turns in bringing out also means it’s easier for group pictures too.<\/p>\n
