Tamsui (pronounced as Danshui) is a north-westerly old port town of New Taipei City, and also easily accessible from Taipei city itself via their MRT. We drove past the Tamsui MRT station stop on our way to the Fisherman’s Wharf, and it sure looked packed with both incoming and outbound passengers! The town has quite a bit of history involving the Spanish and Dutch in the 1600s, then claimed by the Japanese around the late 1800s. We arrived in Tamsui from Beitou Thermal Valley<\/a> just past 2PM, and didn’t think of including any of its historical landmarks \u2014 especially its Fort San Domingo<\/a>. The initial itinerary plan was to spend just an hour exploring the area here, but we ended up staying for 2.5 hours in the Wharf because we’d significantly shortened the preceding itinerary on Yangmingshan, and now had much more time on our hands.<\/p>\n

The early to mid-afternoon showed clear skies, making for really beautiful settings for photos. The area also wasn’t that busy, despite this being a Saturday afternoon. There were few tour buses about as well \u2014 perhaps Tamsui isn’t a particularly common mass tourism spot. Great for us. The first stack of pictures are of the Fisherman’s Wharf, and the latter from the waterfront-facing Old Street which is several minutes drive away.<\/p>\n

If you love photographing boats, you’d go nuts here. There are numerous luxury, ferry-type, and small fishing boats docked at the wharf.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A tourist accidentally bumped into Peter while on the bridge. The latter was really apologetic while Peter wailed. No harm done, as we assured her.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Lots of performing artists in Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf and Old District, including this performer in minotaur-like garb who was keeping still. H took a lot of coercion before she plucked up enough courage to go near this fellow!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Yummy deep-fried squid and shrimp. I probably shortened my life by a year or so having these for lunch, but it was sooooo worth it!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This stuff can’t be that much worse health-wise than roti prata. Go for it!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This fellow was taking requests from visitors on what song to belt out next.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Fisherman’s Wharf Long Beach. Relatively uncrowded for a weekend. There are also child rides about. H and P wanted to try one, so we let them \u2014 cost NTD30 for a couple minutes of joy-riding around the concourse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This was an extremely talented fellow who was doing 3-minute paintings of persons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Old Street was pretty crowded. Or maybe it felt that way because there were less open spaces than the Fisherman’s Wharf.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
