{"id":1973,"date":"2009-01-04T20:54:22","date_gmt":"2009-01-04T12:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/?p=1973"},"modified":"2009-01-04T20:54:22","modified_gmt":"2009-01-04T12:54:22","slug":"multiplaying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2009\/01\/04\/multiplaying\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiplaying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My first encounter with multiplayer games actually goes back to 1993 when I first tried my hand on multiplayer (MP) <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doom_(video_game)\">Doom<\/a>. This game is widely regarded as a landmark title of first person shooter games.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1974\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"blog-doom\" src=\"https:\/\/chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/blog-doom.jpg\" alt=\"blog-doom\" width=\"341\" height=\"223\" \/>Now, multiplayer wasn&#8217;t really sophisticated back then. Four players at most could go at it at a time. We actually had a nifty setup in a company I was interning at, and we put four PCs networked side by side and we had a blast during our lunch breaks and after office hours. I remembered I was pretty good at the game and was usually the top-ranked of four whenever we went head-to-head in deathmatches. But then again, there weren&#8217;t very many persons who were into multiplayer first person shooters then.<\/p>\n<p>This was the early days, well before professional gaming leagues, fancy rigs, high-resolution mice, special gear and the like.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get into MP first person shooters after Doom. Part of it was that the 3D first-person shooters from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quake\">Quake<\/a> onwards gave me bad bouts of motion sickness. So, after getting into the alpha test of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultima_online\">Ultima Online <\/a>in 1996-1997 (?), I got into MMORPGs instead . Over the years there&#8217;s also been one or two strategy games that I&#8217;ve played online, especially <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_in_conflict\">World in Conflict<\/a> which I think I was reasonably good in.<\/p>\n<p>These days there are even international tournaments for these first person shooter games, and even young gamers who train professionally (and get worshiped by fans) like Olympians. I&#8217;m nowhere as good as these fellows are of course, but I still enjoy a round or two of MP shooters, like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resistance_2\">Resistance 2<\/a> on the PS3. My skill level&#8217;s only about average, but the environment in cooperative play is easy to get into, pretty safe, and terrifically exciting.
