Come to think of it, it\u2019s actually pretty fun to travel to a relatively more expensive country like Japan but on a budget. It forces the both of us to really explore the cities a lot more thoroughly to see where we can find bargains and places to visit and dine in without making us feel too much heart-pained later.:)<\/p>\n

Perhaps it\u2019s because of the area our hotel in Kyoto was, but after walking along Shijo-dori and in both directions towards Karasuma Station and away from it, we\u2019d still yet to find a place for lunch that was open at noon and within our agreed upon budgets. Just when we were about to give up and get bento sets from a family supermarket, we chanced upon a small eatery almost very near our hotel, called Nishinotoin.<\/p>\n

The concept's interesting. Right starting from the entrance, you pick up the bowls and dishes you want.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Each item's price is clearly marked in \u5186. We couldn't read the item Japanese descriptions, but several items were easily recognizable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At the end of the line is the cashier. Cute moment when we tried to get the cashier auntie to understand we wanted rice to go along with what we chose; 'small' for Ling, 'medium' for me.:)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We chose five items: a chicken-main dish, spinach, miso soup, a radish-carrot-chicken soup, and a potato salad.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

And it cost us just 880\u5186!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
