{"id":10558,"date":"2010-06-29T21:23:52","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T13:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/29\/thousand-islands\/"},"modified":"2010-06-29T22:56:32","modified_gmt":"2010-06-29T14:56:32","slug":"thousand-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/29\/thousand-islands\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousand Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Thousand Islands isn\u2019t even an appropriate descriptor for the region: there are about 1,800 islands compacted into a relatively small area along St. Lawrence River and right smack in the Canada\/US border. Ownership of the islands is split between Canada and the United States, with many privately owned as summer and holiday homes for the rich, famous and powerful.<\/p>\n<p>The region is supposed to be really scenic \u2013 except again that the Saturday mid afternoon we arrived was all mood and gloom, and even rainy. Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway: pictures. Some islands are barely just 12 meters across, like the below that sits a single cottage and a couple of chairs:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1721-thousandislands\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A1721thousandislands.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1721-thousandislands\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some are slightly larger, like the below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1728-thousandislands\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A1728thousandislands.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1728-thousandislands\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Below<\/em>: Though not by that much: same island. It\u2019s practically a baby.:)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1740-thousandislands\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A1740thousandislands.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1740-thousandislands\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Below<\/em>: Some of the larger islands have beautifully built-up residences that also make for tourist places of attraction. Yep, that\u2019s Boldt castle on the left, in addition to the smaller Power House in the foreground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1747-thousandislands\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A1747thousandislands.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1747-thousandislands\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Below<\/em>: Other islands are little more than rock croppings:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1750-thousandislands\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A1750thousandislands.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A1750-thousandislands\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The boat ride lasted for about 45 minutes, and we \u2013 momentarily \u2013 crossed into Canada. So, while we didn\u2019t go through customs, we can claim to have visited Canada for a couple of minutes, if as illegal entrants!<\/p>\n<p>The detour to Thousand Islands on our way to Niagara Falls added about 5 hours of travel time though. Was it worth it? Well, if you have time to spare, it\u2019s worth a look-see.
