We initially toyed with the idea of visiting Niagara Falls, but dumped it as too much traveling time would had been involved just getting there and returning. Not really time well-spent.<\/p>\n<p>So, the idea of a road trip came up. There are three directions we can spring from Boston: North, South, and West (East would see us driving into the ocean). Westwards: places of interest would be far in between. So, Matt suggested driving up North towards Gloucester: here\u2019s a selection of pictures from our trip there on Saturday.:)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"map12\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/map12.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"map12\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The car rental agency was located right next to the Central Square T subway station, and the rental office was manned by these two American guys who looked like they were US Marines with their crew cuts. We toyed with the idea of booking a humvee, but figured we\u2019d probably not be able to park the damn thing into a lot then. So, it was a Hyundai Sonata:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1574-Gloucester-Matt-flickr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonOLYP1574GloucesterMattflickr.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1574-Gloucester-Matt-flickr\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One thing about driving in the States is that you\u2019d easily get lost + in the middle of nowhere with a GPS-enabled navigation computer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1578-Gloucester-flickr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonOLYP1578Gloucesterflickr.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1578-Gloucester-flickr\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One thing I was keen on trying out during the road trip was to get arrested by the local police for whichever. No such luck though: this police car just ahead of us completely ignored us:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1580-Gloucester-flickr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonOLYP1580Gloucesterflickr.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1580-Gloucester-flickr\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our Ang Mo dude on the wheel. No way I was going to try driving. Not on roads which drive on the opposite side than we\u2019re used to:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0724-Gloucester-Matt\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0724GloucesterMatt.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0724-Gloucester-Matt\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No road trip experience is complete without a visit to Walmart just to see how Americans shop \u2013 which Matt remarked is a very sad state of affairs. We ducked into a Walmart store in Peabody for supplies:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0729-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0729Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0729-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Matt observed that this was a pretty small store by Walmart\u2019s standards, though it looked plenty big to me:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1583-Gloucester-flickr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonOLYP1583Gloucesterflickr.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1583-Gloucester-flickr\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Picking up on sugar grub, candies, chocolates, root beer, and water. All the sweet stuff would later melt into liquid form real quick in the summer heat though.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1585-Gloucester-flickr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonOLYP1585Gloucesterflickr.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-OLYP1585-Gloucester-flickr\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gloucester and Boston is linked by Interstate highways. I was on Dramamine, so was half-conked out for the outbound trip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0737-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0737Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0737-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It took us about 60 minutes to get to Gloucester, the seaside town being about 60 km away. The roads in the town was lined with many houses, all very pretty:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0739-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0739Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0739-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The summer sun was all up, which made for great pictures albeit in a moving car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0753-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0753Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0753-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very different general feeling about the place, with plenty of spaces between residential unit to unit. Nothing like the high density living of Singapore.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0754-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0754Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0754-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spent 30 minutes looking for parking lots in the town. Apparently, car towing \u2013 or minimally parking warden awarded fines \u2013 are a big thing in this part of the world. We finally found a spot that was available for public parking:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0764-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0764Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0764-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But then again, some things just remain the same no matter where you go:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0762-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0762Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0762-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We popped into the town\u2019s Chamber of Commerce to get some visitor information, and to ask about interesting places to check out while in town:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0760-Gloucester\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blog2010bostonDSC_A0760Gloucester.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blog-2010-boston-DSC_A0760-Gloucester\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continued in the next post.:)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matt was pretty sure he\u2019d come over from Missouri when I was in the country, but we were largely undecided as to what to do when we hooked up in Boston.
