{"id":10121,"date":"2010-06-20T12:45:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-20T04:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/20\/whale-watching-glouchester\/"},"modified":"2010-06-22T00:08:21","modified_gmt":"2010-06-21T16:08:21","slug":"whale-watching-glouchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chekyang.com\/musings\/2010\/06\/20\/whale-watching-glouchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Whale Watching @ Gloucester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This has got to be one of the most memorable things I\u2019ve done in a while.:) Matt and I drove to Gloucester, and went on a 5.5 hour whale watching trip on Saturday afternoon. The experience wasn\u2019t easy though. What was supposed to be a 4 hour trip turned into a 5.5 hours long. This period \u2013 July to October \u2013 is when whales are most active and sightings common. But we had no such luck. In most cases, sightings were supposed to have started from as early as 45 minutes out into the sea. But 2.5 hours into the trip we still saw nothing. It was very hard to tell where the whales were going to surface or breach next + choppy waters = boat was unstable + a lot of water splashing about. The D300 was weather proof, but not the lens.:(<\/p>\n<p>One of my video segments next. The whales breach a total of four times in the about 2 minute video clip. The last two times were captured better than the first two.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"601\" height=\"338\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=12704890&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Still, it was well worth the effort to get to the place and the difficulties of the shoot. There weren\u2019t a lot of persons with zoom lenses on the boat, so I think I came up lucky.:)<\/p>\n<p>OK; lots of additional exploration between the whale watch expedition and the days before.
