Day 04 @ Jeju – West Jeju – Saebyeol Oreum

Like Suwolbong Peak, Saebyeol Oreum was a spot we’d included in Day 07’s plan. But we were able to squeeze in a climb up this oreum. Saebyeol Oreum is one of the many small volcanic cones scattered across the island. There are two paths that lead to the summit ridge; facing the oreum, the one on the left is a shorter climb but is much steeper. The one on the right is longer but gentler.

We took the right route for the climb up, and the left one for the way down. We noticed, though, some climbers who took the other route, and they were struggling to make the climb! I guess it finally comes down to your fitness level: the kids found it doable, but the missus and I had to climb really slowly, though that at the same time gave us many opportunities to truly enjoy the amazing wide views of the countryside. The climb up took us about 25 minutes, with the descent much faster at 15 minutes. The winds were really strong at the summit, which made for some fun photos of the two girls’ hair billowing across their faces!

Saebyeol Oreum as we drove up to it.
Starting on the climb up. We took the trail on the right: it’s longer but also somewhat less steep.
About half-way into the climb up.
The missus looks like a speck against the sheer expanse of the view.
About two thirds up!
At the summit.
According to fact sheets, the oreum is 519m above sea level.
Short hair is good in extremely windy conditions!
On the way down.
The trail is solid and providing lots of traction for footwear.

That’s a wrap for Day 04. We’d be checking out of our Seogwipo accommodation tomorrow morning and heading in an easterly direction towards Seongsan. To be continued!
